Why Barry Manilow nearly cried on The Today Show #Gay News # please follow @gaystarnews

With a new album to promote, Barry Manilow is making his first television appearances this week as an openly gay man.

During an interview on NBC’s The Today Show on Thursday (20 April), the 73-year-old music icon grew tearful when taking about the kindness of his fans.

‘These strangers say the most beautiful things to me. They thank me for helping them through their lives,’ Manilow said.

Then things got a bit emotional.

‘The impact I’ve had on people … I’m sorry, I’m going to [cry]. It’s thrilling.’

Manilow married longtime manager Garry Kief in 2014 but the couple has been together now for 40 years.

Their marriage was the first public confirmation of Manilow’s sexuality and it was only recently that he discussed be gay publicly.

‘It’s been great,’ he says. ‘It’s no news to me and no news to everyone around me. Family, friends, band – I think even fans. I don’t think it was news at all.

‘I’m a private guy. I’m a musician. Yes, fame hit me, but I never really wanted to go on that ride. So I kept my dogs to myself – I kept my home to myself… I’m not uncomfortable about that. Garry and I have been together going on 40 years. It’s amazing for anybody.’

Manilow has had 47 singles in the top 40 and 12 number one hits. His new album is This Is My Town: Songs of New York.
